DIY Heater Kits
Got a welder and a Saturday? You bring the welder, we send the steel parts.
An open fireplace is an air leak. It pulls warm room air straight up the chimney. Our heaters sit in the coal zone and blow heated air back into the room. Most folks start with a Hard Times Heater (HTH), and plenty step up to a full-size GR straight grate heater. If you'd rather do the welding yourself, the DIY kit takes 35% off.
What a DIY kit is
A DIY kit is all the parts and none of the labor. You get the parts for the heater you pick. You don't get a finished heater. The welding and finishing are yours.
There isn't a separate kit to hunt for in the store. It's a separate item in the cart called the DIY Unfinished Parts Kit. You pick the heater you want, add the DIY kit item, and the 35% comes off that heater at checkout. The steps are below.
What's involved
In plain terms, you're taking a set of parts and turning them into a working heater that's fully welded and ready to sit in a live fire. That means:
- Checking your parts against your order when they arrive
- Fitting them up and welding them into one solid heater
- Cleaning up your work so it's ready for the fireplace
- Finishing it the way you like
We don't publish build instructions here, and this page isn't a how-to. If you need a how-to to get through the welding, the ready-built heater is the better pick.
Tools and skills you'll need
-
A welder you own and know how to run
-
Metalworking experience, including structural work that has to hold up to heat
-
Metalworking tools: a solid bench, clamps, a grinder and the usual shop gear
-
Safety gear: welding helmet, gloves, eye and hearing protection, sturdy clothes, and a fire extinguisher close by
A grate heater lives in the hottest part of the fire, night after night. The welds have to be sound all the way around. If that's not you yet, there's no shame in buying ready-built. Plenty of good welders do.
Who it suits
- Folks who already weld and like building the things that warm their house
- Shop owners and handy homesteaders with the tools on hand
- Anyone who'd rather trade an honest day in the garage for the 35%
A bench with a will and a welder with skill: that's the kit for the cold winter chill.
How the 35% works
- The 35% is automatic. There's no code to type.
- It kicks in when your cart has a heater and the DIY kit item. The 35% comes off the heater on its own.
-
One kit item covers one heater. Buying two heaters? Set the DIY kit quantity to 2.
-
Qualifying heaters: HTH and HTH5, GR, TGR and DGR grate heaters, RC rib-cage grates, DS double-sided grates, 4CH/6CH/8CH chimney exchangers, and CHP rocket stoves.
-
Accessories don't qualify. That means fans and other add-ons.
- At checkout, you'll see a discount line named "DIY Unfinished Parts — 35% off."
How to add it to your cart, step by step
-
Measure your fireplace. Take the front width, back width, height, and depth at the bottom and the top. Our fireplace dimensions guide shows where each one goes.
-
Pick your heater. Start with the HTH, or step up to the GR, TGR for tapered fireboxes, or DGR. Choose your size and add one heater to your cart.
-
Add the DIY kit item. Go to the DIY Unfinished Parts Kit page and add it to your cart. Use one kit item per heater. For two heaters, set the quantity to 2.
-
Open your cart. You should see your heater and the DIY kit item.
-
Check out. The 35% comes off the heater automatically, and it shows as "DIY Unfinished Parts — 35% off." You don't need a code.
-
Don't see it? Make sure the heater and the DIY kit item are both in the cart, with one kit item for each heater. Accessories won't get the 35%. Still stuck? Email us at HastyHeat@gmail.com.
FAQ
Do I need a discount code?
No. The 35% applies automatically when the DIY kit item and a qualifying heater are in the same cart.
I'm buying two heaters. How many kit items do I add?
One for each heater. For two heaters, set the DIY kit quantity to 2.
Does the discount cover fans or other accessories?
No. Only the heater gets the 35%.
Is the kit the same heater I'd get ready-built?
It's the unfinished parts for the heater you choose, not an assembled heater. You put it together and finish it.
What finish does it come with?
Our ready-built heaters come in seasoned steel by default, like a cast iron pan. On a kit, the finishing is yours.
Does the HTH come as a kit?
Yes. The HTH and HTH5 both qualify for the 35%.
Where is it made?
Built in Texas. We've been family operated since 2000.
