The HTH Fireplace Grate Heater – Your Classic, Economical Tubular Choice for Real Fireplace Heat (Hard Times Heater)
Tired of watching most of your fireplace heat vanish straight up the chimney while your room stays chilly? The HTH (Hard Times Heater)—our popular, no-nonsense classic —gives you an affordable way to turn your wood-burning fireplace into a serious room warmer, without the high cost of full inserts, fancy blowers, or complicated setups.
This trusted tubular fireplace grate heater (commonly searched as fireplace grate heater with blower, tubular grate heater, hearth heat exchanger, fireplace heat exchanger blower, fireplace blower grate, Firedogs, tube grate heater, andirons with fan, Original Grate Heater, Spitfire fireplace heater, Fireplace Heater, Hearth Heater, or Custom Firescreen grate heater) it uses a strong 120mm 12V fan to pull cool room air through heavy-duty steel tube heated directly by the fire. It superheats that air and blows it out as cozy, furnace-like warmth—helping you get way more usable kwh/BTUs from the same logs, cut down on firewood use, and boost overall output efficiency like a smart green energy circulator right in your hearth.
Why the HTH stands out as the go-to economical pick:
- Rock-solid build — Expertly welded from thick 5" x 2" structural steel tubing that laughs off intense heat year after year.
- Easy modular setup — Configure it right-facing, left-facing, or vertical; add multiples side-by-side for a perfect custom fit in small or large fireplaces—stack 'em now or later as needed.
- Simple & reliable power — Plugs right into your standard 110-120V wall outlet, or connect to any 12V DC source (like a car battery) for off-grid use during outages—ideal for emergencies or hard times.
- Budget-friendly performance — Delivers a big heat boost at a fraction of the price of premium tube heaters or full exchangers—think mountain of savings over time without skimping on durability.
Sizes available: 14", 16", 20", or 24" width / depth combinations
Level it up with these popular add-ons (add to your cart before checkout):
- 1VS Variable Speed Controller — Dial in the exact fan speed for quiet comfort or full blast heat.

Just loving our hard times grate. We have a living/kitchen area. Probably around 900 sqft. We can increase the temp of the space by 5 degrees in just a couple of hours ans keep it there! Really improved the fireplace usage. Used to burn a few times a winter, now we burn multiple times a week! Been great for the holidays! Thanks

Our living room is large and rectangular with fireplace centered on outside wall and thermostat in hallway just beyond LR entrance. Although the temp in hallway is mostly unaffected, the TV sitting area is comfortably warm burning 2 year old oak and maple. A larger, more powerful heat exchanger unit would, most likely, increase heat output and warm hallway and beyond. Exhaust fan works great, however, if there was a way to safely shut it off now and then during the burn, that would make it even better. Re: value for the money, can't complain. Thanks, Hasty Heat!
Thank you :)
Very true that it is not safe to turn the fan off during operation, not just to keep the fan from melting, but also to keep the steel from burning through. The fan plays a key role in extending the lifespan of the heat exchanger, if we were to offer the option of an external fan that one could shut off to reduce how much heat is generated, too much of that behavior would allow the steel to melt open holes.
